About Ananda Vihara
Ananda Vihara is the largest Buddhist monastery on Mainamati hillock (c.600–1200 CE), 178 cells around a 45×38 m courtyard with central cruciform temple (4th construction phase). Excavated 1958–65 by F.A. Khan, it yielded Chandra (c.930–1200 CE) and Pala bronzes, 500+ terracotta plaques, and Devaparvata coins. Laterite and brick terraces cut into the Lalmai ridge show 6 rebuilding phases; the western gateway faces the truncated hillock summit. The vihara hosted at least 300 monks and stored copper-plate grants of early Deva kings mentioning Ananda as royal monastery.
Why it mattersType-site for Southeast Bengal Buddhism linking Arakan and Pagan; largest cell count in Bangladesh.
