About

About El-Badari

Type-site of Badarian culture (c.4400–4000 BCE) — earliest farming culture of Upper Egypt preceding Naqada I: hamlets and 6000+ graves at Badari, Qau, Deir Tasa yielding rippled pottery, turquoise, ivory spoons, earliest Egyptian copper beads, wheat/barley and goat/sheep. Guy Brunton & Gertrude Caton-Thompson 1922–31 excavations defined Badarian as predecessor to Naqada/Amratian, linking Saharan pastoralism to Nile agriculture. Nile east-bank bluff cemeteries separated from desert villages.

Why it mattersEarliest farming culture type-site; proves Saharan-to-Nile agricultural diffusion; earliest Egyptian copper.
