About

About Baykara Kurgan

5 m high with 18-m deep shaft to central stone cist, excavated 2006-2017 by Andrei Logvin yielding gold feline plaques and a bronze cauldron with horse fat residue C14 670-620 BCE. Unlike eastern stone cairn kurgans, Baykara is loess-earth with oak timber lining, reflecting forest-steppe adaptation at the Ural fringe. The mound contained a secondary 5th c. BCE Sarmatian intrusive burial with iron sword and sauromatian animal style, proving 200-year reuse.

Baykara's Tobol terrace location marks the western limit of the Saka kurgan province, 800 km west of Tasmola, linking Saka world to southern Ural sauromatae.

Why it mattersWesternmost Saka royal kurgan defines Saka western limit at Ural fringe and shows Sarmatian reuse confirming cultural transition.
