About Castro of Vila Nova de São Pedro

Type-site for Vila Nova de São Pedro Chalcolithic culture (c.3000–2000 BCE) on fertile limestone mesa above Tagus tributary near Azambuja, Estremadura. Fortified proto-urban settlement with three concentric stone walls, bastions and semi-circular towers enclosing stone houses, copper workshop and cistern. Excavated 1937–67 by Afonso do Paço revealing thousands of flint arrowheads, Bell Beaker pottery, copper tools and loom weights. Represents early fortified agglomeration preceding Los Millares parallel, with intensive copper metallurgy. Destruction layers suggest conflict c.2200 BCE. Managed by Municipal Museum; key Iberian Chalcolithic type-site.
