About
About Chalcatzingo
Olmec highland ceremonial centre (c.1500–500 BCE) on Chalcatzingo hill with terraced mound architecture beneath later platforms: excavated by INAH & University of Illinois (David Grove 1971–). Famous for 9 large Olmec-style relief panels carved on living basalt hillside (El Rey, water jaguar, maize god) shunted by Amatlan spring— only Olmec monumental rock art outside Gulf Coast heartland. Terraced habitation with Olmec vs local Tlatilco transition (1650–700 BCE). Highland Olmec trade node for obsidian and jade between Morelos and Gulf Coast San Lorenzo–La Venta. Buried Olmec-era platform mounds (Structure 1–4) under Classic fill. Post-Olmec Epiclassic occupation with 700 CE collapse.
Why it mattersOnly Olmec-style megalithic reliefs in Highland Mexico proving Olmec ideological diffusion far beyond Gulf — chiefdom to state debate anchor.
