About
About Chersonesos Taurica — Quarantine Bay Western Harbour Submerged
Megarian foundation c.528 BCE on Heraclean peninsula, Dorian polis famed for democratic oath stele, defensive walls and Chora vineyards stretching 10 km. UNESCO World Heritage (Chersonesos and Its Chora). Western harbour in Quarantine Bay now 1–3 m submerged: ashlar quay, mole stub and submerged street grid traced by Sevastopol underwater survey. Excavated 1827–present by Imperial Archaeological Commission and Crimea reserve: Byzantine three-naved basilicas, theatre, mint. Coastal erosion and 19th–20th c. naval construction damaged harbour but submerged ashlar headers remain snorkellable.
Why it mattersUNESCO Criterion ii/v — exemplary preserved Greek Chora parcel walls and harbour bathymetry anchors Crimean sea-level history; democratic oath inscription is unique polis constitution evidence.
