About

About Cuello

Cuello lies on the Cuello estate adjacent to the Cuello rum distillery 2 km west of Orange Walk, north Belize, at 30 m. Excavated by Norman Hammond (Cambridge, 1975–1993) with 26 superimposed plaster floors (Swasey–Bladen, 1200 BCE–250 CE), it revealed the earliest lowland Maya village with maize (Nature 1981), mass burial of 26 sacrificed males in a vault on Platform 34, and a Preclassic courtyard complex that foreshadows dynastic courts. The postclassic overbuild (Platform 34 Str.35) retains Mid/Late Postclassic occupation. As the Preclassic lowland maize type-site and one of the best-stratified Formative villages, Cuello anchored the Early Maya chronology debate.
