About Danamombe (Dhlo-Dhlo)
Rozvi/Changamire capital 1690–1830 after Khami, Danamombe is 8 ha walled town famous for Portuguese-influenced walls and oral tradition of Rozvi fire-building (mutupo) and Portuguese dealings (16th–17th c trade firearms for gold). Massive enclosures: main enclosure 300×200 m dry-stone 4–6 m high incorporating quartzite blocks with beaded coursing and turret. Adjacent Naletale's decorated walls replicated pattern (Chisvingo style). Two entrances with buttresses. Contains dhaka hut floors with Portuguese ceramics (majolica) and Chinese porcelain. Abandoned after Nguni Ndebele invasion 1831 (Mzilikazi). Early traveller Bent photographed 1891.
