About

About Dederiyeh Cave

Large karst cave on the northern Levant 60 km NW of Aleppo, preserving 15 m of Middle–Upper Palaeolithic deposits (Yabrudian to Natufian) excavated 1989–2011 by T. Akazawa (Tokyo) and Syrian DGAM. Famous for two deliberately buried Neanderthal infants: Dederiyeh 1 (2-year-old with heart limestone and flint tool as grave goods, c.70 ka) and Dederiyeh 2 (newborn chest burial), plus Levantine Mousterian lithics (Tabun C-type), cut-marked fauna and articulated hearths. Documents Neanderthal compassion and late survival north of the Taurus.

Why it mattersNorthernmost well-dated Neanderthal burials with symbolic grave goods, challenging 'burial = modern human' uniqueness.
