About
About Dougga (Thugga)
Hilltop Numidian–Roman city covering 70 ha, Dougga is Tunisia's best-preserved Roman town. UNESCO inscription credits its exceptionally intact town plan integrating Libyco-Punic sanctuary of Massinissa (138 BCE), Numidian mausoleum of Ataban (2nd c BCE bilingual Libyco-Punic inscription at British Museum), Carthaginian temples, Roman Capitol (166–167 CE tetrastyle podium with Jupiter Juno Minerva), theatre for 3,500 (168 CE) in natural slope, triumphal arches, Severan licinian baths and Antonine baths, and Byzantine fort incorporating temple spolia. 8 km of countryside aqueduct and cisterns reveal water engineering. Ataban mausoleum 21 m high is unique royal Numidian tower.
Why it mattersDougga demonstrates 1,000-year continuity from Numidian kingdom to Byzantine garrison; its intact plan is rare for lack of later overbuilding.
