About
About Eketorp Ringfort — Öland
Eketorp, on southeastern Öland's Stora Alvaret limestone plain, is the only fully excavated of Öland's 19 Iron Age ringforts, a concentric limestone-walled fortress 70 m diameter with 53 reconstructed Iron Age and medieval houses inside. Built c.400 CE (Migration Period), enlarged 700 CE and again 12th–13th century as a medieval refuge with cavalry garrison, its 30,000 finds (300 g gold, Roman glass, cattle metapodials) document the Alvar's pastoral economy. Reconstructed 1964–86 with open-air museum, it lies within the UNESCO Agricultural Landscape of Southern Öland.
Why it mattersOnly total-excavated Öland fort; 30k artefacts define Migration-to-Medieval Baltic sequence.
