El-Kurru ridge 13 km south of Jebel Barkal: tumuli and pyramids of early Kushite kings (Tumulus 1 → Pyramid Ku1 Piye). Excavated by George Reisner Harvard-Boston 1918-19: burials under tumuli superseded by pyramids, horse burials, Piye pyramid Ku1 (19 m base) with corbelled chamber and painting. Ancestors of 25th Dynasty who conquered Egypt c.720 BCE. Transition from tumulus to pyramid documents Kushite adoption of Egyptian kingship ideology. UNESCO component of Gebel Barkal and Sites of the Napatan Region.
