About

About El Zotz — El Diablo Pyramid and Royal Acropolis (Petén, Guatemala)

Steep ridge-top Early Classic royal acropolis (c.300 BCE–750 CE, zenith 350–550 CE) 7 km west of Tikal's enemy El Zotz main group, dominated by 30 m high Diablo Pyramid (terraced platform with summit palace). 2010 discovery of royal tomb of King Diabolus (buried with wooden mask and jade, early 4th century CE) beneath pyramid confirms Tikal–El Zotz rivalry; monumental stucco friezes of solar deity. Pyramid overlooks bajo from 90 m natural elevation — artificial height exaggerated by promontory. Laser mapping shows causeway linking to El Zotz centre.

Why it mattersEarliest decorated royal tomb in Petén rivaling Tikal; demonstrates Early Classic inter-polity warfare megaproject.
