About

About Externsteine

Distinctive Cretaceous sandstone rock formation in Teutoburg Forest with five ~40 m columns bearing man-made grottoes, staircases, solar alignments and famous medieval relief Descent from the Cross (12th century). Debated as possible pre-Christian Germanic sanctuary and archaeoastronomical site (proposed summer solstice light hole) but no Neolithic megalithic proof; documented as medieval hermitage with continuous ritual appropriation.
