Fasil Ghebbi is the 70,000 m² Royal Enclosure of Gondar, Ethiopia's 17th–18th c imperial capital (1632–1864). Within 900 m basalt walls, 6 palaces blend Gondarine-Ethiopian, Portuguese, Axumite and Indian Mughal styles: Fasilides Castle (1640, 4-storey basalt with domed turrets and Portuguese guns), Yohannes I and Iyasu I palaces, Bakaffa banquet hall, 2 churches and lion cages. Founded by Emperor Fasilides who moved capital from nomadic camp to fixed Gondar. After 1864 Tewodros abandoned city; Italian occupation damaged but post-war restoration UNESCO-listed 1979.
Why it mattersOnly fixed Gondarine capital illustrating Ethiopian early modern state formation and Euro-Indian architectural fusion.
