About Gadara Aqueduct (Qanat Fir'aun) — Decapolis Long Aqueduct
170-km qanat aqueduct (106 km underground) from Daraa basin springs in Syria to Gadara (Umm Qais) and the Decapolis, the longest tunnel aqueduct in the ancient world. Commissioned by Hadrian? with Decapolis city-state consortium c.90–210 CE, the system is 94% subterranean to prevent evaporation: 2,900 vertical shafts 20–60 m deep spaced 50 m tapped the basalt aquifer via qanat technique adapted from Persian. Channel 0.6–1.2 m vaulted drops only 0.6 m per km (0.06% grade) over basalt plateau, surveyed by chorographic levelling with shaft-to-shaft alignment maintained within 10 cm. Three bridges carry the last 10 km to Gadara's theatres and nymphaeum atop the Yarmouk cliff.
