About Gao – Tomb of Askia
Capital of Songhai Empire (1464–1591) greatest pre-colonial West African state stretching from Djenne to Agadez. Monument is 17 m high pyramidal earthen tomb of Askia Mohammad I (1495) after his Mecca pilgrimage and creation of standardized law, currency and Songhai army that made Gao cosmopolitan 75,000-strong. Complex includes two flat-roofed mosques (original 1495 and 1999 extension), cemetery with stelae, and assembly ground for Friday prayer. Banco construction with wooden toron like Timbuktu. Songhai relief terracottas and copper import evidence. Niger river port Wabaria nearby with Gao Ancien (old Gao) tell with glass beads from Middle East. Endangered since 2012.
