About Gudme

Gudme (Gudmehjem ‘God's Home’, Gudme–Lundeborg) — Iron Age central-place and beach market (Roman Iron Age 200–500 → Vendel 500–700, peak 300–500 Gundestrup? hall) on Funen island 10 km southeast Svendborg at Great Belt gap, Funen's pre-urban centre. Excavated K. Randsborg: manor halls 30×10 m (Gudme I 200 CE, Gudme II 400 CE 400 m² largest North), 6 km chain with Lundeborg beach port (7th c harbour 4 ha with Baltic amber, Roman coins 200, gold hoard Gudme 300s). 2 km north Gudbjerg gold hoard 4 kg. 10 ha elite zone, 1,200 graves. Gudme means ‘home of gods’ — sanctuary before Odin? Funen Storebælt trade gate to Bornholm and Hedeby. Place-name deity evidence.
