About Heloros – Submerged Quay of Southeast Sicily
Syracusan colony ca. 700 BCE at Vendicari tell supersite: Doric Heloros with monumental walls 3.5 km, sanctuary of Demeter and harbour channel through brackish Vendicari lagoon – quay slabs –0.5 to –3 m with bollards, fish tanks, 365 Crete earthquake subsidence +0.6 m recorded. Greeks → Carthaginians 310 BCE → Romans 214. Archaeological park 2021 mapped lagoon mole 90 m, WWII bunker cuts wall, dune beach now covers 30%.
