About Hermopolis Magna – Nile Harbour of Thoth at El-Ashmunein
Hermopolis Magna (Khmun, City of Eight) was capital of the 15th Upper Egyptian nome (Hare nome) on the Bahr Yussef - Nile confluence with a river harbour handling Middle Egypt grain, ibis mummies and Thoth temple trade. The 2.5 km enclosure (Kom el-Ashmunein, 500 ha, walls 12 m thick, 15 m high) encloses the Thoth temple (pylon 40 m) and a harbour canal (400x80 m) where Bahr Yussef met the Nile; the canal now silted sebkha at +48 m with limestone quay blocks and ibis catacomb causeway. The harbour exported Hermopolitan book of the Dead papyri and ibis votives (2 million mummies). Excavations by Roeder (1929–39), Spencer (1980–) and British Museum (1980s) mapped the canal and enclosure.
