Largest Predynastic city known (c.3500 BCE 5 ha) and origin of kingship, Nekhen produced Narmer Palette (c.3100 BCE unification), First Dynasty fortified enclosure (Khasekhemwy Fort 60×34 m mudbrick 12 m high), and earliest temple with faience façade (Main Deposit). American excavations revealed elite cemetery HK6 with elephant burial (African elephant) and painted tomb (Tomb 100 c.3500 BCE – earliest painted tomb with boats, smiting scene). Naqada II–III brewing complex 65 km (?) industrial brewery (8 vats 300–500 l). Controlled gold/ivory routes. Nekhen vs Buto dual capitals before Memphis.
