About

About Jebel Qara Desert Kites

Field of 18 desert kites on the monsoon-facing Jebel Qara plateau, the southernmost kite province globally at 17 N. Kites are classic Neolithic game traps - 60-180 m wide funnel walls converging to a 3-m wide killing enclosure with 2-4 terminal cells - dated by OSL under wall base to 4600-3800 BCE. 7 m high adapted to escarpment fog capture, and show two-phase refurbishment in the Bronze Age (2000 BCE) with lowered wall lines. The Dhofar monsoon microclimate allowed gazelle herds at this latitude; kites face downslope toward seasonal pools, indicating mass kill linked to monsoon aggregation.

2022 survey recorded associated Ibex engravings on terminal cells, linking kite walls directly to rock art.

Why it mattersSouthernmost kite province extends desert-kite phenomenon 900 km south of Jordan-Syrian core.
