About
About Karanis — Central Insula Granary Complex at Kom Aushim
Central insula granary of Karanis, largest Graeco-Roman town in northeastern Fayum (3rd c. BCE–5th c. CE) founded by Ptolemy II to exploit Moeris reclamation, now buried under 3–6 m Fayum silts at Kom Aushim central mound. The insula (45 × 38 m) comprises two courtyard granaries (thesauroi) 14 × 9 m with vaulted brick bins, a 1st c. CE dovecote tower, and a papyrus archive (Tetrarchic tax rolls) in a jar sealed under collapsed roof. The granary stored emmer and wheat for Alexandria's annona; capacity estimate 280 tons based on bin volume.
Stratigraphy shows Ptolemaic enclosure walls reused in Roman phase with Socnopaios cult shrine (crocodile mummies) adjacent. The mound was partially deflated by sebakh digging (1920s Michigan) but this insula escaped due to later Islamic cemetery sealing. The Fayum lake (Moeris) harbour pier 200 m north connected granary to lake shipping.
Why it mattersBest-preserved Fayum thesauros with papyrus archive — Fayum grain economy and Roman Egypt tax system archive.
