About Kelermes Royal Kurgan — Ciscaucasian Scythian Chieftain (Adygea, Kuban)

Adygea's hallmark North-Caucasian Scythian–Meotian interface royal kurgans (Kurgan 1–2) on Laba River terrace below Caucasus, 25 km from Maykop. G. ), 8th–7th c BC Kuban type but intrusive 7th c BCE Scythian swords (Kelermes sword — earliest Scythian akinakes with gold scabbard). Kurgan 2 yielded a 6-horse sacrifice with scale armour and Ionian import. Dated 670–640 BCE, Kelermes is the key 'returned Scythian' signature after the Near Eastern campaign (ca.

700 BCE per Herodotus), mixing Cimmerian substrate with Urartian booty. Hermitage collection.
