About
About Kepoi — Aphrodite Sanctuary and Eastern Submerged Necropolis (Taman)
Kepoi, the 'Gardens', founded c.580 BCE by Milesians on Taman mudflats east of Phanagoria, named for Aphrodite Kepois. Small island polis on former Cimmerian Bosporus archipelago, famous for Aphrodite sanctuary and terra-cotta workshops. Eastern necropolis and lower quarter now 1–3 m submerged after Taman subsidence and Krymsk mud-volcano aquifer rise. Excavated 1959–2010s by Sokolskii and Paromov: sanctuary deposit 600+ terra-cottas, kurgan burials, harbour pits. Database Kepoi already focuses on central colony; this entry isolates Aphrodite sanctuary and eastern submerged necropolis sector with distinct mole.
Why it mattersLargest Aphrodite votive deposit on Taman — terra-cottas anchor Bosporan coroplastic chronology; submerged necropolis tests Taman subsidence differential between Phanagoria and Kepoi 3 km apart.
