About Knockroe Passage Tomb

Finely decorated Neolithic passage tomb on hill slope in south Kilkenny, often called the 'Irish Newgrange of the south'. Cruciform? single chamber with 6 m east–west double passage (two passages intersect at central chamber) with rich megalithic art — quartz, solar symbols, zigzags, lozenges on orthostats and capstone. Dated c.3000–2800 BCE (Boyne–Loughcrew tradition). Eastern passage aligned to midwinter sunrise, western to midwinter sunset, creating dual solstice illumination. Excavated by Muiris O'Sullivan. Surviving mound 22 m diameter with kerbstones. State care monument.
