Caravan ksar (fortified village) on Ounila caravan road to Marrakech, compressed earth (pisé + adobe) architecture in classic southern Moroccan style: agglomerated houses inside 6 m-high crenellated pisé walls with angle towers, upper agadir (citadel) granary on hill dominating ksar, narrow covered streets, decorated facades with geometric clay relief, and palm oasis on Oued El Maleh floodplain. 11th-c Almoravid foundation legend, present fabric 17th c under Mawlay Ismail (?), inhabited until 1960s flood. Symbol of pre-Saharan habitat and Trans-Saharan trade. Film location Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator. 8 ha fortified.

Why it mattersPrime example of southern Moroccan earthen habitat and integrated oasis system controlling Saharan trade.
