About

About Kul Tepe (Jolfa, near Araxes)

Late Chalcolithic–Early Bronze stratified tell (c.5000–2800 BCE, 6 m) on the Araxes floodplain at Jolfa, excavated by Abedi & Omrani (U. Tabriz 2010–) presenting the northernmost Urmia basin Dalma–Pisdeli sequence. Mound reveals Kura-Araxes Black Burnished ware (Phase III) over Late Chalcolithic chaff-tempered Pisdeli painted strata, with evidence of araxes-valley copper working and trans-Caucasus obsidian from Syunik (Armenian). Demonstrates northwestern Iran's role as Chalcolithic corridor between Urmia basin (Hajji Firuz–Yanik) and Transcaucasia (Mentesh, Leyla Tepe), with no direct Mesopotamian contact until EBA.

Why it mattersNorthern frontier of Chalcolithic Iran bridging Caucasus–Iran; proves Aras corridor independent of Mesopotamia (no Ubaid) until Kura-Araxes.
