About Menouthis – Submerged Canopic City of Isis
Twin town to Heracleion 2 km east, port on Canopic branch of Nile feeding Alexandria. Menouthis housed famed oracle sanctuary of Isis of Menouthis – healing cult visited by Sophronius (7th c.) and Damascius, with incubation dormitories. Earthquake + liquefaction subsidence and Nile delta sediment failure drowned city late 8th c. CE (AD 741–742 quake series) alongside Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus. Franck Goddio IEASM 2000– mapped limestone quays, Isis temple podia, chapels, private houses under 5–8 m silt with intact ceramics, coins of Justinian to Leo III, showing continuous occupation to late Byzantium.
Pottery kilns and wine amphorae show emporium status. Relative sea-level + subsidence 4 m since antiquity.
Why it mattersOnly surviving Isis Medica incubatio sanctuary with stratigraphic link to Heracleion–Canopus drowning horizon; dates subsidence sequence for Alexandria harbour sequence.
