Megarian colony c.610 BCE on narrow peninsula now joined to mainland by tombolo isthmus; western and northern fortifications, Hellenistic gate and early Byzantine churches partially slipped –2 to –4 m due to subsidence and Black Sea rise. Drowned moles and causeway foundations visible aerially west of isthmus. Continuous occupation Thracian to Ottoman makes it 'Millennia city' UNESCO since 1983; 40+ churches (Pantocrator 14th c). Submerged aqueduct? and necropolis peninsulas.
Why it mattersBest preserved Black Sea peninsula colony demonstrating 3,200 years continuity; submerged walls evidence for relative sea-level rise rates.
