About Pinnacle Point Caves — Early Modern Human Site
Pinnacle Point is the 164,000–50,000 BP sea-cliff cave complex (PP13B, PP5-6) 12 km E of Mossel Bay where Marean found earliest heat-treated silcrete (72 ka), bladelet microliths, marine shellfish middens (brown mussel) and ochre 164 ka evidence for coastal adaptation driving modern behaviour. Cave 13B yielded MSA 164–90 ka with 30 m thick shell midden and ochre-stained hearths. Part of UNESCO Human Rights, Liberation and Reconciliation + Pleistocene Occupation serial (2024). Coastal cliff 10 m above sea.
