About Pont du Gard — Roman Aqueduct Bridge
Three-tier arch bridge 48.8 m high and 360 m long carrying the Nîmes aqueduct (Eure spring at Uzès to Nemausus) across the Gardon River, apex of Augustan hydraulic architecture (c.40–60 CE, recent Claudian dendrochronology revised to 40 CE). Top channel (specus) 1.2×1.8 m carries 35,000 m³/day at 0.4% grade over 50 km; lower 6 arches (21.6 m span) and middle 11 arches create the familiar stacked silhouette. Dry-laid limestone blocks 6 tonnes each without mortar, voussoirs precisely cut and held by iron dowels, surviving 2000 years including 1743 road widening arch cut.
Why it mattersTallest Roman bridge-aqueduct and canonical 3-tier arch model copied at Segovia and Tarragona; engineering benchmark for gravity flow.
