About
About Portus Julius – Agrippa's Volcanic Naval Harbour at Lake Avernus
37 BCE Marcus Agrippa's mega harbour built in 33 days bridging Lake Lucrinus to Lake Avernus via canal through the volcanic crater rim, to house Octavian's fleet vs Sextus Pompey. Designed with hydraulic pozzolana moles and Cocceius tunnel (1 km) linking Avernus to Cumae. Bradyseism and 1538 Monte Nuovo eruption submerged Lucrinus dam — remains now –1 to –6 m under Lucrine lagoon (Agrippa's causeway piles still at –4 m) while Avernus freshwater lake retains Tuff groynes. Virtually intact engineered landscape showing Roman naval logistics pre-Misenum.
Why it mattersOnly surviving Late Republican artificial naval basin showing pre-Imperial mole engineering and tunnel-canal harbour system abandoned for Misenum.
