About
About Río Bec Structure V-N Central Pyramid
Río Bec Group V Structure V-N central pyramid: 20×15 m base, 18 m high with false twin towers, steep stair (55°) to ornamented temple with Chaak masks and medial moulding. Excavated by Dominique Michelet CNRS 2003-12 (French-Peruvian project) documenting Río Bec not a single city but 50 km² dispersed system of 200 elite house-pyramid groups without true acropolis. Structure V-N is nominal 'type-site' pyramid but not largest. LiDAR 2018 clarifies dispersed hamlet model overturning earlier 'Río Bec city' myth.
Why it mattersKey Maya (Río Bec) pyramid with stratified sequence and regional importance.

Mysteries & theories
Mysteries
- 01Why Río Bec never built nucleated city — environmental vs political choice
- 02Whether V-N is truly type-site or arbitrary French designation
Theories
- 01Río Bec dispersed urbanism as garden-city — elite farmsteads with own pyreads replacing central state
- 02V-N as ceremonial focus of segmentary lineage not dynasty
Theories are interpretations, not findings. The seal above tells you how much scholarly weight the place carries.
