About Jogeshwari Caves

Largest early Hindu rock-cut cave temple in Mumbai, integrated within dense Jogeshwari urban slum. The Main Cave 47.5 m deep × 32.5 m wide with 15×10 m central hall supported by 6 massive basalt pillars, side wada courtyards and later Yogeshwari shrine, cut mid-6th c. Shaiva Brahminical under the Kalchuri or early Chalukya. Originally a Buddhist vihara nave adapted to Hindu linga worship with residual stupa base under the linga, showing religious conversion architecture. The cave is the Mumbai metropolitan region's oldest rock-cut monument predating Elephanta, with ASI 2018 encroachment clearance and drainage renewal.
