Earliest copper mine in Europe (c.5400–4500 BCE) with Vinča mining settlement on Danube iron gorge: 45 vertical shafts (20 m deep) following malachite–azurite–chalcopyrite veins into Balkan bedrock, excavated by Borislav Jovanović (1968–86). Vinča miners used antler picks, grooved stone hammers and firesetting; platforms produced copper ore for Belovode/Plocnik smelting (earliest metallurgy in world c.4650 BCE). Settlement pits with impressed pottery and mining worship hoard. Added to Archaeological Sites of Exceptional Importance (1983). Vinča D ritual with 30 m hill-terrace mining camp buried under forest colluvium.
Why it mattersEarliest documented copper mine in Europe proving Vinča invention of extractive metallurgy 5400 BCE before Near East — world significance.
