About

About Saddang Ancient Canal & Rice Terrace Hydraulics (South Sulawesi Bugis)

Lowland canalized river–terrace hydraulic (12 m) on the Saddang River delta–plain, Pinrang Regency, South Sulawesi, Indonesia—Bugis hydraulic core 400 km north of Makassar. 2-2 m deep branching from Saddang weir (banteng timber weir reconstructed 1934) feeding 12,000 ha of sawah terraces + 3,000 ha brackish tambak shrimp ponds at delta. Earthen canal with bamboo-reinforced bund (tanggul) + wooden duck-flap sluice (pintu air). Oral Bugis La Galigo chronicle notes Sawerigading's canal 1200 CE; Dutch Landraad 1880 notes 11 km 'oude leiding'.

Sawah bund maintenance by Bugis sara' water rotation (allotment by buffalo hours). Last pre-Islamic lowland terrace hydraulics before colonial 1934 Pinrang irrigation project lined sections. Threatened by Saddang dam upstream (Bili-Bili style) starving silt.

Why it mattersLowland sawah + tambak hydraulic as Bugis pre-colonial prototype before modern Pinrang scheme; La Galigo canal myth.
