About
About Sarepta (Sarafand)
The only Phoenician heartland city extensively excavated. Between Sidon and Tyre, J.B. Pritchard (Penn, 1969–74) uncovered a Middle Bronze promontory town overlain by Phoenician industrial zone (1200–333 BCE) with pottery kilns, glass workshops and purple-dye vats, plus the Tanit-Ashtart shrine with votive figurines and inscribed sherds naming Tanit — type-site for Phoenician pottery, glass, and religion, mentioned in Kings (Elijah) and Egyptian texts.
Why it mattersDefines Phoenician material culture and religion; only heartland city excavated.
