About Sēlpils

Sēlpils (Selburg, Selian *Sēlija*) — Selian tribal hillfort (Late Iron Age 9th–13th c, Livonian 1208 burning, Order stone castle 1373) on Daugava right bank 15 km south Jēkabpils opposite Staburags travertine rock, Central Latvia. Selian tribal centre of Sēlija (Selonia), rampart 5 m high timber-earth with stone facing, plateau 100×60 m 40 m above Daugava, lower town 3 ha. Henry of Livonia 1208 ‘Selonia fortissima’. Excavated E. Mugurēvičs: Selian pottery, Daugava trade beads, 1373 Livonian Selburg stone ruins. Pļaviņas reservoir now laps rampart base. Selian language island between Latgallians and Semigallians. View Staburags 18 m cliff opposite (now submerged).
