About Si Thep Historical Park (Ancient Town of Si Thep)
500–1300 CE) on the Pa Sak plains 200 km north of Bangkok in Phetchabun — UNESCO World Heritage 2023 'The Ancient Town of Si Thep and its Associated Dvaravati Monuments' (WH 1662) with Inner City (2 km moated oval 5th–9th century Dvaravati) and Outer City (4th expansion). Excavated since 1935 by Prince Damrong and Fine Arts Department, Si Thep yields: Khao Klang Nai 7th-century stupa terrace (Dvaravati Mahayana), Khao Klang Nok colossal 64 m square laterite stupa (8th century largest Dvaravati monument in Thailand), cave monastery Khao Thamorrat with 7th-century Dvaravati low-relief Bodhisattva on hilltop axis 15 km west, and Khmer Prang Si Thep later (11th century).
The site demonstrates Mon Dvaravati Buddhism (Theravada + Mahayana) with Hindu syncretism influencing Dvaravati lowland network before Ayutthaya.
Why it mattersGreatest Dvaravati Mon city — Khao Klang Nok is largest Dvaravati monument; cave monastery with Mahayana reliefs only in SE Asia, unlocking Mon Asia–Dvaravati network before Angkor.
