Spectacular cliff citadel sacred to Venus-Astarte (Venus of Sicca), Numidian then Roman colony perched 780 m on Djebel Dyr table mountain. Massive polygonal walls, cisterns, basilica and temple podium of Venus now under kasbah. Sacred prostitution cult described by Valerius Maximus; Jugurthine War siege site. Roman baths, theatre fragments and Byzantine fort reused in Ottoman kasbah.
