Pericles-era Doric temple (444–440 BCE) on 60 m sheer cliff at southern tip of Attica, visible to ships rounding Cape Sounion. White marble peripteros 6x13 columns (15 survive) built under same program as Parthenon; frieze depicts Lapith-Centaur and Theseus myths. Byron carved name on column. Sanctuary includes Athena temple remains, propylaia and fortification walls from Peloponnesian War garrison.
