About Spiennes Neolithic Flint Mines
Largest and earliest Neolithic flint mining complex in Europe, extending over 100 ha on the Campine chalk near Mons. Shaft-and-gallery mines 10–15 m deep (c.4300–2300 BCE) yielded dark banded flint knapped into polished axes widely traded across Belgium and northern France. Extensive spoil heaps, workshops and the SILEX'S interpretive centre illustrate the transition to underground mining; inscribed UNESCO 2000.
