Berber-Punic then Roman civitas beneath modern Sfax, namesake of the Taparura coastal reclamation project. Punic tophet sherds, Roman cisterns, fish-salting vats and 4th-c. church mosaics found in rescue excavations (Mrabet). Salt flats (sebka) provided purple dye and salt. Medieval Sfax (849 CE) reused ashlar.
Why it mattersRare Punic-Berber stratum preserved under living city, illuminating Syrtis Minor urbanism.
