Jugurthine war citadel on Dorsal watershed (1,017 m, coldest Tunisian town), Thala preserved Jugurtha's treasury (Sallust) then Roman castrum and Byzantine fortress (pentagon, 4 towers). Water cisterns rock-cut (12), church with baptistery, olive presses. 108 BCE Metellus siege failed due to waterless approach. Byzantine refortification under Solomon. Modern town overlies.
