Limestone cave near Meteora, Thessaly, with the longest continuous stratigraphic sequence in Greece, spanning 130,000 years from Middle Palaeolithic to Neolithic. Excavations revealed Neanderthal and modern human occupation, 45,000-year-old footprints, Mesolithic burials and the world's oldest known surviving constructed wall (21,000 BCE). Theopetra is a key reference for Palaeolithic climate, technology and the transition to farming in southeastern Europe.
