About Tholos de El Romeral
Tholos (beehive) megalithic tomb crowning low hill 4 km north of Antequera, third element of Antequera Dolmens UNESCO World Heritage Site (with Menga and Viera). 3800–3200 BCE? 3000–2500 BCE? 2 m diameter with 4 m-high corbelled dome of small limestone slabs, with 26 m long corridor oriented southwest to midday sun? unique among Antequera dolmens which face northeast. Axial menhir behind chamber and twin lateral chambers opening off corridor. Built with small masonry not orthostats.
Excavated 1904 by Viera, restored. Demonstrates distinct tholos technique (Mediterranean influence) contrasting with trilithic dolmen technique at Menga/Viera.
