About
About Thule on Greenland Ice – Pytheas Ultima Thule Extended to Qaanaaq
Thule on Greenland Ice (Qaanaaq) – pseudoarchaeological extension placing Pytheas's Ultima Thule (325 BCE, 6 days sail north of Britain, 'where sea–air–ice slush' pyknoi thalatta, midnight sun) at Qaanaaq Greenland 77°29′N 69°20′W (formerly 'Thule' US Thule Air Base/Pituffik), claiming Inuit Thule culture (1000 CE) is Pytheas's Thule successor and that 'Qaanaaq ice cliffs at 77°N' are Pytheas's 'coagulated sea'. Claims Nazi Thule Society correctly placed Thule at Greenland ice.
Rejected: Pytheas's 6 days north of Britain (at ~4 knots = 800 km) places Thule at ~63°N (Trondheim/Iceland/Faroes), not 3500 km to 77°N Greenland; mid-summer midnight sun at 77°N is polar day not Pytheas's 'short night' (Iceland 63°N). Included to illustrate Inuit Thule culture eponym conflation pseudo.
Why it mattersPedagogical: distinguishes Pytheas sailing distance metric (6 days × 100 nm = 600 nm ~ 1000 km) from polar Greenland toponym eponym trap.

Mysteries & theories
Mysteries
- 01Why Pytheas 6 days at 4 knots = 800 km to Iceland 63°N not 3500 km to Greenland 77°N
- 02How Inuit Thule culture 1000 CE Danish eponym Mathiassen 1927 creates eponym pseudo continuity
Theories
- 01Thule Air Base named by US 1951 after Rasmussen's 1910 Thule trading station – modern toponym, not Pytheas
- 02Nazi Thule Society 1918 took name from Pytheas mis-located at Atlantis north – mysticism not hydrography
Theories are interpretations, not findings. The seal above tells you how much scholarly weight the place carries.
