About

About Tianlongshan North Manshan Grottoes

North Manshan ridge northernmost 8 caves (caves 18–25) of the Tianlong system, perched on the narrow north spur 600 m north of the main western peak, with late Tang (c.750–860 CE) caves noted for the most mature Tang drapery naturalism — wet-clinging robes (yuti) and Indian-inflected tribhanga poses. Cave 21 preserves the only intact central pillar (caitya) in Tianlong (2.8 m high, circumambulatory) with four directional Buddhas, linking the mountain to Mogao cave typology. Less visited, north ridge shows post-An Lushan (755) Tang revival patronage by Taiyuan military commissioners (jiedushi).

Why it mattersNorthern late Tang tail of Tianlong with only caitya pillar and mature wet-drape style, post-An Lushan revival patronage.
