About
About Tocra (Taucheira)
Harbour of Barca famed for overseas Greek founding exclusivity, Tocra (Taucheira) encloses 2.5-km 5-m-thick Archaic city wall (610 BCE) with square bastions — earliest Greek fortification in Africa — plus rock-cut cisterns, agora, Roman baths, two Byzantine forts and quarry. Boardman-Hayes 1963-66 stratified deposits yielded earliest Greek black-figure in Libya and quantified Tocra's ceramics revolution chronology. City's name changed to Arsinoe under Ptolemy II but retained Taucheiran coinage. Still inhabited village within southern wall; harbour silted.
Why it mattersEarliest Greek city wall in Africa providing ceramic chronology cornerstone for all Cyrenaica — Toucheira deposits dated Pentapolis foundation.
